Tip | Run Windows Applications in OS X

One thing that may annoy many users who are migrating from the PC platform to Apple computers, is the fact that some applications for Windows do not have versions compatible with Mac OS X…

Even users familiar with Mac OS X may miss a particular application…

And, in some cases, having a Virtual Machine to run this application is not a viable alternative.

For these cases we can use a very useful tool called Wineskin

Wineskin

Wineskin uses Wine to make ports of Windows applications to OS X, but the nice thing using Wineskin is that you can create an Application Wrapper and share it with your friends for example…

It is really simple to use… First, you need to download Wineskin Winery from HERE

After download it and drag it to your Applications folder, run the app…

You will need to add a New Engine and update the Wrapper Version… After this, you should have something similar to the image below…

Click at Create a New Blank Wrapper to start setting up your Windows application (I’ll use Foobar2000 as example)…

Give a name to your new application wrapper… At this stage, the Wine Engine will be updated and you’ll have the ability to install Wine Gecko (if not installed) that is a replacement for Internet Explorer…

After the process finishes, browse to the Applications folder at your Home “User” folder (/Users/YOUR_USER/Applications) and double click your new application wrapper (you can move it to the Applications folder later if you want)…

You’ll see a window like the example below, click Install Software

If you already have the installer’s executable (.exe), click Choose Setup Executable and browse to it…

Install the application as usual… Don’t worry about the C: drive as it is virtually inside of the wrapper…

When the installation finishes, you will have the ability to enter the Advanced options and change some settings as your will…

Refer to the Manual Page to know what each option does…

Done, after this, double click again your wrapper and your application should be started…
